Committing Scripture to Memory

Oh how love I thy law!  It is my meditation all the day.  Psalm 119:97

We must live a life of abiding where the Blessed Comforter remain in and upon us.  One profound passage that we should often meditate on is written in the Book of John, Chapter one, verses 32 and 33:

And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon Him.  And I knew Him not:  but He that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, the same is He which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 

How do we live such lives where the Holy Spirit would choose to remain in and upon us as it is written in John 1:33?  First, we must faithfully take time to learn His Personality and be sensitive to Him.  It most pleases the Comforter when we remain yielded and create an atmosphere in our homes filled with worship unto thy Lord and our words are pleasant to our families.

During these times, when we are now spending more time at home I encourage you to draw nearer unto the Lord by increasing the daily reading and studying of the Bible.  The Holy Spirit is ever-faithful and will pour into you and strengthen your inner man as You seek Him. Family, also use this time of resting in the Lord to try a new method and read the Bible out loud. Ephesians 3:16

I most enjoy the passage in the Book of Acts, Chapter 8:26-39 of the Ethiopian, an eunuch sitting alone in his chariot reading the Word. We see Phillip first received his instructions from an Angel.  Thereafter, we continue to read how the Lord’s will for the eunuch manifested when the Holy Spirit directed Phillip to fellowship with the eunuch.  The Lord’s will for Phillip to teach the Word to the eunuch ended with the eunuch receiving salvation and being baptized.  Surely I believe it was his hunger that moved Heaven for him. How glorious!  

The Lord is ever-faithful to fulfill the desires of our hearts.  Just as He answered the heart of the Ethiopian; He will answer our prayers for the salvation of our loved ones.  

Now as you began to commit Scriptures to your memory, ofttimes, you may find the Lord is leading you quietly to certain verses that He desire you to memorize.  The Lord may also use a certain Book in the Bible to begin training you.  Ofttimes, you may find He will lead you to repeatedly read the same Book or Chapter out loud to train you to walk in your spiritual authority and dominion in the Kingdom of God.

Here are a few keys to Committing the Scriptures to Your Memory:

Write the Verse

Thy Word is a lamp upon my feet, and a light upon my path.  Psalm 119:105

One of the keys I have discovered useful is to record a verse using an index card, journal or notebook.  Using index cards to write verses that you are led to memorize will help you during your study.  Ofttimes, I use colorful ink pens to circle a certain word the Holy Spirit has given understanding on. 

Be sure to make use of the back of the index card to record any revelation you may receive from the Holy Spirit. 

Soaking in His Presence 

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.  Psalm 1:2

Before you begin any study time with the Lord make sure you guard your place of abiding.  Bind distractions and loose focus.  Take delight in the Lord by soaking in His glorious Presence before you begin reading, studying and meditating on His Word.   

Practice

Another key that is most helpful in committing the Scriptures to your memory is saying the verses to your friends or family throughout the day.  You will also find each time you write or read the verses; the Holy Spirit will be faithful to give you deeper understanding and revelation. 

Sing it!

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.  Ephesians 5:19

As a young girl, I was taught to sing the verses from the Book of Psalms.  It is still the most powerful key in creating an atmosphere of Heaven.  I am sure you will find this method of memorization of Scriptures to be most rewarding.
